Just outside the historical town of Somerset West in the heart of the Cape Winelands is the beautiful Helderberg 4×4 Trail. This part of the Western Cape may be known primarily for its world-class wines, but there is certainly no shortage of other fabulously exciting things to do and see. Those with a penchant for adrenaline will, no doubt, love exploring it from the comfort of their 4×4 vehicle.
The Helderberg 4×4 Trail is 12 kilometers long and takes between an hour and two hours to complete. The various parts of the trail have different levels of difficulty, ranging between an official grading of two and four. It is a circular route that is made up of mud, sand, clay and gravel. There are a number of steep climbs and river crossings that add to the adventure. For those that would rather opt out of particularly technical areas, there are some escape routes available. No guide is necessary for this trail.
The Helderberg 4×4 Trail is open all year round, thanks to the temperate conditions of the Western Cape. However, during the wet season, drivers can expect extra challenges in the way of slippery terrain and fuller rivers. In fact, some parts of the route may need to be closed during particularly rainy times.
Being situated at the foot of the magnificent Helderberg Mountain Range means that the views from this trail are exceptional. Nature-lovers and outdoor enthusiasts will be rewarded with stunning backdrops from just about any vantage point. In addition to the 4×4 adventure, visitors are advised to explore the surrounds on one of the hiking trails or cycling routes.
